Wanaka Recreation Centre opened in July 2016 to provide a community sports and recreation hub for the Upper Clutha. An adjoining three-pool aquatic facility opened in June 2018.

Normal operating hours are:

Monday to Friday: 6.00am - 9.00pm

Wanaka's home of sport and recreation

This extensive facility complements the community’s rich sporting culture and rapid growth in population.

The smoke-free complex is now established as the Upper Clutha's hub for community sports, events and programmes including social sport leagues. Whether you want to shoot a few hoops, hold a tournament or arrange weekly training, Wanaka Recreation Centre offers a variety of options and equipment to suit locals and visitors alike.

Other facilities will be added to the facility over time in line with the masterplan project announced in December 2018.

Location

Wanaka Recreation Centre is located on Sir Tim Wallis Drive off Ballantyne Road and will soon be accessible from SH84 near Puzzling World. Ample free parking is available on site.

Indoor sports hall

The indoor sports hall includes the following full-size court configurations:

2x basketball
2x netball
3x volleyball
4x badminton
2x tennis

Other features of the indoor sports hall include:

Rebound ace ‘impact’ flooring
Centre curtain between court one and court two
Lockable storage facilities
Tiered seating for 250 people
The hall can be configured for events to cater for 600 people seated banquet style, with a greater provisional occupancy. The total available floor area is 1,564m².

Outdoor multi sports turf

A purpose-built, artificial, sand-based turf is fully fenced with lighting, storage facilities and toilets on site. Court configurations include:

1x hockey pitch, 55m x 43m including full size training D
3x netball courts
3x tennis courts

Reception and meeting room

Our customer services team is located in the foyer. Light refreshments are available at customer services. There are toilets, showers and changing facilities, including separate accessible facilities.

A 41m² meeting room is available for hire, featuring a 12-person foldaway boardroom table, audio visual display, a kitchenette and Wi-Fi.

Alcohol-free environment

QLDC promotes an alcohol-free environment at Wanaka Recreation Centre. Our objective is to minimise potential harm caused by the excessive or inappropriate consumption of alcohol. We recognise there may be occasions where it is appropriate for alcohol on the premises; we will permit the sale and consumption of alcohol when there is an alcohol licence in place.
