Dry conditions and high winds have meant a fire on the shores of Lake Wakatipu has spread causing State Highway 6 between Kingston and Queenstown to be closed.

"The volunteers are working hard to contain the fire near the road, but it's unlikely to be re-opened for at least another hour," Queenstown Lakes District Council principal rural fire chief Gordon Bailey said.

The council urged people planning on travelling this route to hold off for an hour or so, until the road had been re-opened.

Updates would be broadcast on all major radio stations.
