Work has begun to remove some of the aging or poorly positioned trees from public areas around the District, both as a safety measure and to restore significant views. The work should be completed within weeks, weather permitting.

The trees include a large pine in Park St, Queenstown, between the skate park and the road, which is at risk of falling on boat sheds.

QLDC Parks Technical Officer Gordon Bailey said that other trees earmarked for removal included a sorbus tree beside the Queenstown kindergarten and a pine and a gum tree to be taken down as part of safety works on Mt Aspiring Road.

Eight trees along the edge of the rugby field at the Queenstown Events Centre and the Frankton Golf Course will be removed as they are encroaching on high tension power wires, and will be replaced with a smaller growing tree species.

Partly fallen willows in Arrowtown by Butler’s Green and others at the north end of Lake Hayes are also to be removed.

Council contractors have already completed trimming a small number of trees at the entrance to Jardine Park to improve access for emergency services vehicles.
