The safety realignment of Arrowtown’s Centennial Avenue will get underway from tomorrow, Queenstown Lakes District Council roading manager Ian Marshall said.

The realignment is in response to a history of accidents on the stretch of road between the Arrowtown Golf Course and McDonnell Road.

"We will be realigning an 850 metre stretch of road that has been a bit of an accident trap in the past due to its corners and dips,” Mr Marshall said.

Construction of the road meant delays on the route were inevitable.

“We will need to operate on a one lane system, which means people should anticipate delays of up to five minutes on that stretch,” Mr Marshall said.

The project was expected to be completed by the end of March.

Mr Marshall said motorists wanting to avoid delay should consider alternate routes to and from Arrowtown (Lake Hayes Road).
