A small number of trees and shrubs at the Arrowtown cemetery have been temporarily removed, to allow a new timber retaining wall to be built. The wall will prevent leaves and garden litter continually spreading onto grave sites.

“We’re very conscious that cemeteries are sensitive areas and we are treating the project with care and attention,” QLDC General Manager of Operations, Ruth Stokes said. Wherever possible, the Council will consult relatives regarding the reinstatement of any landscaping.

The retaining wall is expected to be finished next week. There will be room between the headstones and the new wall for families to place cut flowers and wreathes.
