Work is underway to replace a traffic calming initiative at both entrances to Cardrona after concerns were raised about its potential impact on motorcyclists and cyclists.

The ‘thresholds’ featured river stones and exposed aggregate, and were designed to enhance the entrances to the town. Last week the standard post-construction audit and public feedback identified that – whilst attractive and in keeping with the heritage nature of the area – the new surface posed a potential problem.

QLDC General Manager Infrastructure and Assets Erik Barnes said the decision was made to remove the thresholds and reinstate a smooth road surface. Contractors began work yesterday and will be finished by the weekend. The road will be resealed next week, depending on weather.

Roading and landscaping improvements have been underway in Cardrona since the end of the ski season and are due to be finished by the end of November. “Fortunately we have been able to find a more suitable use for the thresholds, which will not be wasted,” Mr Barnes said.
