New Rubbish Contract Commences

A new contract for refuse and litter bin collection in the Queenstown Lakes District started today (Thursday).
The contract with Otago Southland Waste Services, has a term of 8 years at an annual value of $999,999 plus GST per annum.
The contract covers:
- Weekly kerbside collection of refuse in bags and 120 litre wheelie bins from residential areas and collection points across the district.
- Collection of 2 sizes of rubbish bags (30 litre and 60 litre)
- Twice daily collections of commercial refuse in bags from the Queenstown central business district between 10am – 12pm and 11pm – 1am.
- Daily collections of commercial refuse in bags from the Wanaka central business district.
- 3 times a day emptying of litter bins in the Queenstown central business district and twice a day in the Wanaka central business district.
- Additional emptying of litter bins throughout the district for special events and during peak periods.
- Collection of illegally dumped refuse and evidence (Lakes Environmental are still responsible for enforcement).
- 25 key performance indicators which if achieved in full can attract a 5% performance payment to the Contractor for any monthly period. Conversely, a disincentive deduction of 5% applies if less than 20 of the key performance indicators are met in any monthly period.
The start of the contract also saw more options available to residents across the district with a view to reward those who reduce their household waste.
“We have created the options. Now the community can be rewarded for choosing to contribute to the district’s target to reduce waste to landfill by 50%,” Mr Borowy said.
“Keep an eye out for the bright new collection trucks, featuring a 50% reduction target and a message to reduce, reuse, recycle,” he said.
