Top Accountant to Oversee QLDC Audit and Risk Management

Date:
Nov 18, 2013

QLDC will have more robust financial controls and risk management following the Council’s decision to establish an Audit and Risk Committee with two independent members.

Mayor Vanessa van Uden said the Council had appointed the President of the Institute of Directors, Dunedin accountant Stuart McLauchlan, and the Chairman of Skyline Enterprises, Ken Matthews of Queenstown, to serve alongside her and Cr Calum MacLeod. Mr McLauchlan will chair the committee.

“The skills and experience Stuart and Ken will bring will be a huge benefit to the Council,” Mayor van Uden said. “They are independent and objective, and they have both agreed to serve in a voluntary capacity for no remuneration.”

Both men bring extensive business and risk management skills to the Council. Mr McLauchlan is a director of several large companies and Pro-Chancellor of Otago University. Mr Matthews is a previous Chief Executive and Managing Director of Skyline Enterprises.

Mayor van Uden said that the committee would oversee the Council’s audit processes and financial reporting, as well as its risk management procedures, internal controls and legal compliance. Councillors were unanimous in supporting the establishment of the committee.
