Crown Range Update - Chains Essential

The Crown Range Road is now open but chains are essential.   

The road was closed overnight (Saturday) due to treacherous conditions, however chains must be fitted to all vehicles travelling across the alpine pass, with snow on the road in places.Contractors will be monitoring the situation closely with further snow forecast today.

Motorists without chains are advised to travel between Queenstown and Wanaka via the Kawarau Gorge and Cromwell. This journey adds only ten minutes.
