Those standing in the Queenstown Lakes District local body elections were urged to get their nominations in, well in advance of next week’s deadline, QLDC electoral officer Jane Robertson said.

Nominations for the Council election closed at 12 noon next Friday, 20 August. A total of 10 people had so far handed in their nominations.

“The nomination tally stands at ten, including two nominations for Mayor,’ Ms Robertson said.

Nominations were coming in slowly for this year’s election. “However, numbers are on a par with those received one week out from the previous election,” she said.

It was important anyone who was planning to stand for election handed in their nomination well before next week’s deadline to allow enough time for their nomination to be processed.

“If a nomination is handed in on the morning of the deadline and it hasn’t been filled in correctly, there may not be enough time to correct the situation, which could mean the nomination is invalid,” she said.

Anyone who is a New Zealand citizen, aged over 18-years-old and enrolled on the parliamentary electoral roll was eligible to stand as an electoral candidate.

They must be nominated by two people, both of whom must be over 18-years-old and must be enrolled to vote in the area in which their nominee wants to stand. They must also pay a $200 deposit.

Nomination forms are available from Council offices and must be returned there before the deadline next week.
