Work will continue this week at the site of a major rockfall on the Mt Aspiring Road, accessing Treble Cone Ski Area and the Matukituki Valley, Queenstown Lakes District Council infrastructure services general manager Mark Kunath said.

The rockfall, estimated to be between 10-20 tonnes was discovered on Sunday morning by a ski area staff member.

“Council engineering staff and contractors worked to clear the road with one lane access restored yesterday after 2pm,” Mr Kunath said.

A helicopter and monsoon bucket was deployed to clear any further loose rock on the bluff above the road prior to re-opening to traffic.

‘We will continue to do further work on the face over the next few days to check stability and remove any further loose rock,’ Mr Kunath said.

A geotechnical inspection would also be undertaken.

Meanwhile road users should anticipate a reduced speed limit and further traffic delays this week on the road.
