Media Advisory - Tree Recovery on the Kawarau River
- Date:
- Mar 20, 2012
Kawarau River users are being urged to exercise caution in the area below Remarkables Park as logging recovery work begins on Monday.
Queenstown Lakes District Council harbourmaster Marty Black said a number of trees, which had grown too large and were potentially dangerous, had been felled on the north river bank. The trees now needed to be removed without damaging the walkway on the bank. In order to do lift the trees out, a wire rope will be slung across the river, at times within 2 metres approximately of the river level.
Signage warning of the logging recovery work will be placed at Frankton Marina and a buoy with red flags will be located around 50 metres upstream to show the area of operations.
“Extreme care must be taken by all river users, “Mr Black said. “ Commercial operators will be kept informed by radio telephone and we ask private users to follow the contractor’s directions.”
The logging recovery operation is expected to take two weeks. No work will take place at the weekends.
