Two deteriorating weeping willow trees on the Wanaka lakefront are to be felled, having been identified as hazardous to the public.

Queenstown Lakes District Council parks manager Gordon Bailey said the trees, situated in the vicinity of the Rotary Playground opposite the Wanaka A and P Showgrounds are in decline. “The trees are hollow in the middle and have lots of dead wood which poses a risk to people using the foreshore,” he said.

“While it’s sad to see them go, there is no option but to take them down before they fall down and we need to keep public safety in mind.”

He said tree removal work will take place from Monday 27 August to Wednesday 29 August with replacement planting scheduled to occur next winter.
