The second stage of the Mount Aspiring Road reconstruction has begun following a shutdown for the ski season.

Queenstown Lakes District Council project manager Rob Darby says the nature of the work meant temporary road closures would be required during the first few weeks of the upgrade.

“Existing road layers need to be excavated and replaced and that will require some closures,” he said, “We will however try to keep disruption to a minimum and residents will still be get to and from their properties although sometimes there may be short delays.”

The temporary road closures would take place between 7am and 6pm weekdays from Monday 12 November to Friday 30 November 2012, involving a 400m length of Mount Aspiring Road from Sargood Drive to Far Horizon Drive. A detour would be put in place for through traffic travelling between central Wanaka and west Wanaka. This detour will be via Bills Way and Sargood Drive.

Mr Darby said the second part of the upgrade included new mountable roundabout and pedestrian refuges at the Sargood drive intersection, installation of new street lighting and kerb and channelling as well as full reconstruction and sealing of the road.

The entire project was scheduled to finish by March next year.
