New pipes to be installed along Shotover Bridge

Work to install new wastewater and water supply pipes across the Shotover Bridge is set to start this week.

Queenstown Lakes District Council General Manager Property and Infrastructure Peter Hansby said the $3m project would provide for current and future wastewater and water supply capacity as growth in the area continues.

“The work involves replacing around 320m of wastewater pipes and installing new water supply pipes along the downstream side of the Shotover Bridge. Then we’ll be connecting them to existing pipes in the ground at either end that were installed earlier as part of the recently completed underpass project,” Mr Hansby said.

To minimise disruption, most of the work will be completed from the riverbed. Where this is not possible, the work will be completed at night between 11.00pm and 5.00am, reducing the bridge to single lane.

“We’re working hard to minimise the disruption for this busy commuter route.  We do ask that drivers slow down and take extra care when driving in this area while the work is underway,” Mr Hansby said.

“During any required night works, we’ll always keep one lane open and notify immediate neighbours directly.   We’ll also advertise the work on our social media channels,” he said.

Work is expected to be complete in September 2020.
