Wānaka Community Board to align Stage Two of Wānaka Lakefront Development Plan with Masterplan parking options

The Wānaka Community Board (WCB) has agreed to pause Stage Two of the Wānaka Lakefront Development Plan to align the considerations for parking with the options that will be presented as part of the Wānaka Masterplan later this year. In the interim the focus will shift to detailed designs for Stage Three: Lakeside to maintain momentum on the overall programme.

The decision came on the back of motions from Councillors Ross McRobie and Jude Battson, with lakefront parking issues to be resolved to the satisfaction of the Wānaka Community Board and Full Council before Stage Two proceeds.

As a result, the construction of a planned four metre-wide promenade for Stage Two would also be rescheduled, and the Wānaka Lakefront Development Plan implementation timeline amended.

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) General Manager Community Services, Thunes Cloete said that pausing progress on Stage Two was understandable, following public concerns raised around parking on the lakefront.

“The Wānaka Community Board made a tough decision, but a pragmatic one in response to public feedback,” said Dr Cloete. “Residents were concerned about parking if current plans for Stage Two went ahead, so we need to revisit that.”
