Public jetty proposed for Frankton Beach
- Date:
- Nov 2, 2018
In an exciting step towards supporting a future ferry service on Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown Lakes District Council is calling for feedback on the construction of a new public jetty on Frankton Beach.
QLDC Mayor Jim Boult said the proposal would see a range of improvements to an area of reserve at Frankton Beach to encourage active travel and support future alternative transport solutions.
“This reserve upgrade will allow safer access for walkers and cyclists using the Frankton Track, while still catering for short term carparking nearby,” he said.
“The proposed jetty could be used for a future ferry service and in the meantime would be available for local boaties to use for pick up and drop off,” he said.
Proposed improvements to the area would include:
- Construction of a new public jetty and waiting room
- removal of vehicle access to the reserve south of the public toilets
- a new car park formed near the public toilets (a 4 hour restriction will apply)
- realignment of the Queenstown trail to separate it safely from the carpark
- new bike stands near the jetty
- various reserve improvements including new native planting.
Residents and ratepayers are now invited to provide feedback on the proposal until 23 November.
Following that, in December Councillors will be asked to consider all feedback and approve a minor amendment to the Sunshine Bay, Frankton, Kelvin Heights Foreshore Management Plan to allow for construction on the foreshore.
“Subject to all approvals, construction of the jetty and reserve improvements could commence in Autumn 2019,” Mayor Boult said.
