Crown Range Road users are being advised to factor in extra travel time next week when the Crown Range Road upgrade moves up a gear.

Major upgrading work is taking place on the road with this section of the project set to be finished by the end of March.

Queenstown Lakes District Council general manager infrastructure Erik Barnes says while every effort is being made to keep the road open, some closures of up to twenty minutes will be required.

“Stabilisation work begins on Monday and there will be a three day period when we occasionally need to shut the road. We’re advising all motorists who use the Crown Range to factor extra time into their journey,” he said.

It was expected that no more than two closures per day would be required from Monday 28 January to Wednesday 30 January but unfortunately the times would vary. Road closures would only take place between 9am and 5pm to avoid inconveniencing commuter traffic. Sealing work would take place from 31 January to 1 February and traffic would be reduced to one lane at times during that period.

“The Crown Range Road upgrade is a big project but once it’s completed, all road users will benefit from a better and safer driving experience on this busy alpine pass,” Mr Barnes said.
