Queenstown Playspace officially opens to the public

- Oct 5, 2018
Mayor Jim Boult cut the ribbon on the new Queenstown Playspace today, officially opening the playground and marking the arrival of a premier, family-orientated drawcard right at the doorstep of Lake Wakatipu.
Delighted to open Queenstown’s first destination playground, Mayor Boult said the project’s high-profile central location meant a world-class facility was needed to align with the Queenstown Town Centre Masterplan.
“With a million locals and visitors passing by we wanted to provide an exciting, innovative and fun space for them to stop in and enjoy as a family,” Mayor Boult said. “This playground will assist in creating a CBD that families want to congregate and spend time in, and celebrates the unique Queenstown environment.”
Mayor Boult remarked the district has a growing community with a diverse range of wants and needs, and that the playground offers something for children of all ages while integrating with the natural environment.
“We are proud to be able to offer this new and exciting asset, one with overwhelmingly strong support from locals in particular.”
Mayor Boult then extended thanks to those involved in the project, noting funding support of $100K from Central Lakes Trust and the level of work undertaken by the QLDC Parks team, in particular Community Services General Manager Thunes Cloete, Parks & Reserves Officer Maddy Dowman and the QLDC Gardening team.
QLDC is working on the final stage of the project which is for the Playspace to be given its formal name.
