QLDC to start swimming pool inspections district-wide

Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is about to kick off inspections of all residential swimming pools across the district.

QLDC Building Services Manager Chris English says recent law changes for pool owners mean stronger controls to reduce the risk of children accidentally drowning.

“Legislation introduced by the government last year puts more onus on pool owners and the Council to ensure pools are compliant and properly fenced and that spa pools or hot tubs have appropriate safety covers.”

“The expectation is that Council inspects all residential pools every three years to ensure they are safe,” Mr English said.

To make this happen, QLDC has recently appointed a swimming pool inspector, who is tasked with developing a register of swimming pools across the district, and carrying out the inspections.

“We currently have a register of around 350 pools district-wide but we’re sure there will be plenty more.  We encourage anyone with a pool who hasn’t already been contacted by us to get in touch so we can add you to the register for inspections,” Mr English said.

The first inspection will determine if the pool complies with the law and if not, what needs to happen to make sure it does.  Where any remedial work is required, a follow up inspection will be arranged to confirm the pool can be signed off as compliant.

Inspections are due to start on 20 August.
