Annual flood awareness campaign starts next week

Date:
Oct 27, 2017

The Queenstown Lakes District Council and Otago Regional Council's joint awareness campaign is run in spring to coincide with the time of year where flooding is most likely. Whilst the last flood event occurred in 1999 and mitigation measures have been taken, the chance of further floods is still very real.

The campaign will involve a walkabout in the ‘flood-prone zone’ of the Queenstown and Wanaka CBDs. Owners and occupiers of flood-prone businesses and households can expect a visit to remind members of the community of what information (including hazard identification) is available to them to help prepare and respond to a potential flood, should Lake Wakatipu or Wanaka (or both) reach high levels.

It is essential that our communities are ready to manage the exposure to flood risk rather than try and avoid or limit these risks through engineered alteration of the physical environment.

Dates and times:

Queenstown (Tuesday 31 October) between 1300 and 1800

Wanaka (Wednesday 1 November) between 0900 and 1300
