Safe new route for cyclists and pedestrians

Cyclists and people walking to the new Wanaka Recreation Centre can take a shortcut through a purpose-built cycle and walkway, which opened this morning.
The new route, jointly funded by Queenstown Lakes District Council and Willowridge Developments Ltd, goes from Ballantyne Road to the recreation centre and provides a safe route for pedestrians and cyclists, avoiding construction traffic in the area.
Willowridge Director Allan Dippie said that the company was “pleased to contribute to the funding of this cycle and walkway and work with the Council to enable this access to the new centre.”
Signage for the new access was erected this morning and within minutes the first cyclists were pedalling along the track.
QLDC Chief Financial Officer Stewart Burns said the new pathway for cyclists and pedestrians would encourage people using the new Recreation Centre to choose alternatives to cars when visiting the facility. “We see this access way as serving a dual purpose. It enables people to cycle and walk to the new centre while at the same avoiding stretches of road that could be particularly busy with construction vehicles.”
