Temporary restrictions on irrigating lawns and gardens have been put in place for Arrowtown.

From Monday 29 December, watering can only be done using hand-held hoses between 9am and 6pm.

Queenstown Lakes District Council has set the new restrictions because the Arrowtown water supply is not keeping up with demand during the day, while one of the three tanks at the reservoir is being repaired.

Chief Engineer Ulrich Glasner said that the water supply could produce up to 45 litres/ second, but demand was averaging 67 litres / second. “While this hot weather lasts, we need to increase the restrictions a little more so that we can match supply to demand and make sure the reservoir refills overnight.

“We’re very grateful to those who have already cut back on watering their lawns and gardens during the day.”

It’s always more effective to irrigate for an hour in the evening when it’s cooler than during the day when the water evaporates quickly.
