Wanaka Airport Land Purchase
- Date:
- Sep 27, 2004
The Queenstown Lakes District Council has ensured the ongoing future viability of the Wanaka Airport with the confirmation today of the purchase of 59.2 hectares of neighbouring land.
The land, formerly owned by the Big River Company is located to the North, East and West around Wanaka Airport and forms part of the flat elevated river terrace on which the airport is located.
"The Wanaka Airport and the Council were given first option on this land as a result of a previous negotiation relating to the Poplar Beach subdivision," Wanaka Airport manager Tim Johnston said.
As a result of further negotiations stemming from May this year, Mr. Johnson and Council lawyer Graeme Todd have finalised the purchase of the land for the price of $1 million.
"The Council has had the foresight to future proof the airport for generations to come. The additional land will ensure there is good space for additional development on the north side of the runway, freeing up the south-side for other needed facilities, such as a passenger terminal and associated carparking," Mr. Johnston said.
All the current available land at the airport had now been leased.
"The demand for hangers and facilities has exhausted the supply of suitable sites. This purchase brings with it some flexibility in the ongoing sustainable management of the airport," Mr. Johnston said.
Both Mr Johnston and Mr Todd were credited with an excellent result.
"We are entirely satisfied that this purchase will act to guarantee the future of the Wanaka Airport," Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Duncan Field said.
The Council was also grateful for the full co-operation of the vendor throughout the process.
