The Queenstown Lakes District Council has entered into a unique arrangement with a worm farm supplier to encourage the community to recycle organic matter.

"There are a number of ways you can recycle your organic waste, including composting but worms are a lot more fun," Queenstown Lakes District Council waste minimisation officer Dr Linda Wright said.

The Council had been running a worm farm at the Queenstown Council office for more than six months.

"It's about leading by example but in particular I wanted to make sure the worms were able to weather the severe winter months and they have come through with flying colours," Dr Wright said.

The Council had entered into an agreement with Cromwell-based worm farm supplier Central Wormworx Limited.

"Normally a worm farm costs $135. The Council will subsidise the first 100 worm farms ordered so that our residents can receive the four tier wooden worm farm, insulated lid, instructions and 1kg of red tiger worms for just $100," Dr Wright said.

The arrangement would be on a first come first serve basis.

"It really is a brilliant way to recycle all your kitchen waste with the added bonus of manufacturing vermicast or worm dirt which works like magic as an organic garden fertiliser, plus it's a fascinating process for children and a great way to introduce them to the recycling culture," Dr Wright said.

People could order a worm farm by phoning Robbie of Rosanna Dick after 6pm on 03 445 0263.
