Places to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

- Date:
- Apr 7, 2014
Two areas have been set aside for members of the public to catch a glimpse of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they drive between venues during their visit to the Queenstown Lakes District next Sunday.
There is no royal walkabout scheduled in Queenstown, and the couple’s lunch at the Amisfield Winery and a jetboat trip with Shotover Jet are private events, according to the Royal Visit Offices in the Department of Internal Affairs.
Prince William and Catherine will arrive at Queenstown airport, Frankton, at 2pm on Sunday and be greeted by Mayor Vanessa van Uden. There will not be any opportunity for the public to see the royal couple at the airport as they will be exiting the airport directly from the tarmac, not walking through the terminal.
They will drive directly to Amisfield, passing the Lake Hayes Pavilion, where parking will be available for people who would like to stand and watch the royal motorcade pass by. Spaces will be reserved for the Wakatipu Senior Citizens’ Association, and additional carparking will be available on the grass.
Two entrances to the Lake Hayes reserve will be open on Sunday – the normal entrance to the pavilion and also the access road to the rowing club. Traffic management staff will be on duty to direct vehicles within the reserve area.
The royal couple are scheduled to pass by the pavilion just before 2.15pm.
At 3.15 they are scheduled to depart for Shotover Jet at Arthur’s Point, driving via the Lake Hayes – Arrowtown Road.
The second public viewing area is at the Millbrook Corner, at the intersection of Lake Hayes Road and Malaghan Road, where the couple are scheduled to pass by at about 3.20pm.
People will be able to stand inside the fence at the Millbrook Corner, but there will be no carparking available on the site, or along the roadline. People are advised to park in McDonnell Road and walk along to the Millbrook Corner.
Access to the Shotover River at Arthur’s Point will be restricted on Sunday. Motorists are advised to expect delays of 5-10 minutes at the Edith Cavell Bridge from around 3.30pm – 5.30pm.
Oxenbridge Tunnel Road will be closed to the public, and there will be no vehicle access between Atley Road and Arthur’s point Road.
