Second Christmas Tree Targeted - Community Angered

The vandalism of the second Christmas tree sculpture overnight has angered the Queenstown community.

"The Council has received phone calls and emails from residents incensed that the second sculpture, situated at the Fernhill roundabout, has now been targeted by vandals," Queenstown Lakes District Council special projects manager Lee Harris said.

On the weekend the sculpture on the boardwalk, next to the William Rees statue was accidentally knocked over and then vandalised, with the star wrenched from the top.

Kawarau Jet advised the Council yesterday that they had located the star in the water and it had now been retrieved.

"We had really just come to terms with that and are working hard to try and have the tree repaired and back in place before Christmas and then last night some idiot or idiots took it upon themselves to attack the second sculpture," Ms Harris said.

A sizeable amount of weight had been applied to one of the lower branches, bending it almost 90 degrees.

The Council had more than doubled its Christmas decoration budget this year for Wanaka, Arrowtown and Queenstown, run a decoration competition, introduced new Christmas banners, put up extra lights and decorations and commissioned the tree sculptures.

"It has been really well received and that's what makes it so very disappointing for the Council and for the community," she said.

Residents had phoned and emailed the Council this morning to register their disgust that the second tree had been hit. Fortunately a team from Works Infrastructure was able to run some running repairs yesterday on the roundabout tree.

"These sculptures are owned by the community and people really feel affronted by these attacks. It would be great if our residents can help us to keep a watchful eye over the sculptures. If anyone sees any suspicious behaviour then please contact the police immediately," Ms Harris said.

With Christmas carols scheduled to take place this weekend and strong entries in the 'Get into the Sprit' decoration competition, the community was really embracing the chance to get festive.

"The actions of a few selfish individuals are not going to stop this community from celebrating," Ms Harris said.
