Council Agree to Regional Council Process
- Date:
- Mar 2, 2005
The Queenstown Lakes District Council has agreed to sign a triennial agreement to allow the Otago Regional Council to explore an increased role in supporting regional infrastructure facilities, including Carisbrook Stadium.
"The matter is now something that the ORC must test in terms of community opinion but legally it requires the sign-off of Otago local authorities before it can take on new functions. There are regional rate implications for this community, as there are benefits that would arise from a regional strategy," QLDC chief executive Duncan Field said.
If the community supported the changed role the ORC could undertake a significant new activity that could result in a set of amenities and consistent support for amenities, regionally.
"This could impact on local facilities including the Queenstown Event Centre but there is some distance to travel yet before we have a clear picture of the implications locally. At this time we have simply agreed to test the proposal," Mr Field said.
All other local authorities had agreed to sign the agreement which would now see the ORC carry out a public opinion survey.
