Extension on Heritage Plan Change

Date:
Aug 1, 2005

The Queenstown Lakes District Council has extended its submission period on the Heritage Plan Change to allow the community another opportunity to recommend trees in need of protection.

"At the moment the Plan Change lists approximately 30 additional trees for inclusion and protection in the District Plan. That list was compiled after the Council consulted with heritage organisations and the community over the last two years," QLDC chief executive Duncan Field said.

The Council had also just completed an inventory of trees enabling it to submit several additions to the Plan Change.

Despite having already called on the community to list trees for protection, in light of recent events, there appeared to be more awareness about trees.

"It is in everyone's interest if we extend the submission period and make one more call for heritage trees," Mr Field said.

The Heritage Plan Change was available at the Council's offices in Queenstown and Wanaka.

"If you think you know of a tree that should be protected, that is not already listed, then let us know," Mr Field said.

This could be achieved simply, by calling and talking to a customer services officer or emailing the Council services@qldc.govt.nz or writing a letter.

"If the tree meets the assessment criteria for heritage trees, then it is likely to be included in the Plan Change and protected in the District Plan," Mr Field said.

Late submissions on the Plan Change will now be accepted until this Friday (August 5). The QLDC strategy committee will be asked to accept the late submissions.
