Crown Range Hearing This Week

Date:
Nov 29, 2005

A hearing will take place this week on the proposal to restrict heavy vehicle access on the Crown Range Road.

The Council notified its intentions to prohibit access to vehicles exceeding 14,200kg in gross laden weight or exceeding 12.6 metres, other than access for property owners within the prohibited zone, permitted vehicles or vehicles required for road maintenance.

The restriction was originally notified in May but was renotified after a legal error was detected in the notice.

The Council has received 17 submissions, nine in favour (two sought conditions) and eight opposed.

"There was some strong opposition, particularly from the commercial sector but likewise there was some strong support, particularly from residents of Crown Terrace and regular road users. That being the case we hope to hear further submissions on Friday from all parties, before the panel makes a decision," Queenstown Lakes District Council general manager utilities Mark Kunath said.

The Council proposed the restriction for safety reasons and to address ongoing road damage.

The hearing is scheduled to take place at 10am on Friday December 2 at the Queenstown Council offices.
