Fire Ban

Date:
Dec 7, 2005

A fire ban will be implemented from Saturday for the entire Wanaka Ward, including Wanaka, Makarora, Cardrona, Luggate, Albert Town and Lake Hawea, Queenstown Lakes District principal rural fire officer Chris Gregory said.

A ban would also apply to the Central Otago District Upper Clutha area.

The ban meant no permits would be issued and any current permits would be withdrawn.

"What it means is that no person can light any fire in the open air or cause or permit a fire to be lit," Mr Gregory said. Barbeques in a controlled residential environment are still permitted.

People also needed to be vigilant, particularly when using chainsaws, gas barbeques in open areas and when disposing of cigarette butts.

It was possible a ban could follow for the Wakatipu if more rain did not fall before Christmas.

"We are keeping a watching brief on the Wakatipu but at this time of year, even if you are issued with a permit you can expect a number of conditions to ensure the burn is heavily controlled," Mr Gregory said.

The ban would be notified in Saturday's papers.
