Fire Ban - Wanaka Ward

Date:
Jan 6, 2006

The current fire ban imposed by QLDC and Department of Conservation will be lifted from midnight this evening, Friday the 6th of January 2006.  The fire ban which  was implemented in early December covered the entire Wanaka Ward, including Wanaka, Makarora, Cardrona, Luggate, Albert Town and Lake Hawea.

Queenstown Lakes District principal rural fire officer Chris Gregory said that recent rain had reduced the fire danger level to a point where the fire ban can be replaced by a restricted fire season.  Under a restricted fire season permits are required for all fires in the open air, except for camp fires in properly constructed fire places and gas barbeques.

Chris Gregory said that he appreciates all the support from the community in respecting the ban, which has been reflected in the low number of calls to fire outbreaks throughout the district.

Chris reiterates that residents and visitors need to take care in the outdoors as there is still plenty of dry vegetation that can easily ignite and reminds people that permits are required.

The long term forecast indicates dry weather conditions in February 2006.  QLDC will continue to monitor the fire danger and may need to reinstate the fire ban if the danger levels return to extreme.

Residents and businesses are reminded that a fire ban still applies within the Central Otago District Council area.
