The Queenstown Events Centre was the place to be this Saturday morning, Queenstown Lakes District event coordinator Jan Maxwell said.

"Not only will families get to check out the layout of our new aquatic centre but there is a huge incentive to come along and join in the fun," she said.

The two hour (10am-12pm) aquatic centre pool party, featuring music, food, balloons, an icy plunge pool, dress up competition and prizes would have a very special extra appeal for all young people aged 18 and under.

"At 11.30 we are going to draw the name of the young person who in just over a year's time will have the honour of being the very first person to ride the hydro slide, which will be a really huge deal at the official opening. You have to be in to win," Mrs Maxwell said.

Children were also encouraged to dress up in keeping with the aquatic theme.

"We will have lots of great prizes," Mrs Maxwell said.

The pool party was a brilliant opportunity for the community to come and get a really good insight into the look and feel of the new aquatic centre, the building of which was scheduled to get underway by mid year.

"In winter next year we will be swimming in what is going to be an outstanding community facility. Saturday is a chance to come and find out why it is so exciting," she said.
