Kingston Urban Design Workshop

The Kingston community is being encouraged to attend a workshop to discuss the character of Kingston and some of the of the urban design strategies that are listed in the Community Plan that was developed in 2003.

"Prompted by some large scale development that was being proposed in Kingston, the Council felt it would be useful to have an urban designer assess the character of Kingston and to provide comment on the urban design matters raised in the Kingston Community Plan," Queenstown Lakes District Council planning and strategy manager Vicki Jones said.

An assessment had been undertaken by urban designer, Rebecca Skidmore and a report prepared.

"The report looks at what makes Kingston special and suggests an action plan for the future," Ms Jones said.

It's important that the author of the report, Council's planners and the community discuss the report and develop a common view of how the place should look, feel, and develop over time.

The report, which would be presented at the start of the workshop was a starting point for the community.

"We will be seeking feedback on the report and action plan and will workshop each of the suggestions," Ms Jones said.

The workshop was an opportunity to learn about how towns were designed and developed over time, and how to plan for growth in a way that ensured special characteristics were retained.

The workshop was scheduled to take place on Sunday April 2 at the Kingston Golf Club from 9am until 12pm (midday).

"It would be fantastic to see a good representation of the community come along, including all age groups," Ms Jones said.

An added drawcard was the chance to see a photo display at the workshop of urban images captured by a group of children from smaller communities, including Kingston.
