Comment Sought on Draft Tree Policy

Date:
Mar 20, 2006

The Queenstown Lakes District Council is seeking public comment on its Draft Tree Policy.

"Trees are an essential part of this environment. This policy is an opportunity to address the issues relating to the recognition, strategic planning, management and long term continuity of the tree resource within our district," QLDC parks manager Gordon Bailey said.

The policy would also help raise awareness within the community, particularly in reinforcing the importance of trees in both the urban and rural environment.

"The policy applies to individual trees, groups of trees and areas of existing and regenerating bush on Council administered reserves, open spaces and other council owned land. It also establishes policies for looking after protected trees," Mr Bailey said.

The policy can be viewed at Wanaka and Queenstown council offices, district-wide libraries and was available on the council website, on the home page.

Comments needed to be received by the council on or before the 21 April, 2006.

"Once the final policy has been adopted it will be reviewed after 12 months and then every three years after that," Mr Bailey said.
