A major proposed Queenstown development has been credited for going the extra mile, Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Duncan Field said.

Peninsula Road Limited last week received consent to construct a major complex on the Kawarau Falls Park site.

In particular it was notable that the developer had optimised the full potential of the site, zoned for such an extensive development, without compromising some issues of real public interest, Mr Field said.

"The commissioner's decision records that the development set a high standard in terms of architecture and design, including good acoustic insulation and parking that went beyond what was required," Mr Field said.

Other positives included the protection of heritage items on the site, the protection of existing trees and the provision of public walking space through the site.

The community would also benefit, at the cost of the developer, to an upgrade on Peninsula Road and rehabilitation of Crown Land.

"It is an example of a quality application that has gone beyond the requirement and creates what has the potential to be a significant and attractive development on a unique site," Mr Field said.
