Makarora Meeting to Discuss Future Zoning

Date:
Jan 9, 2007

A report which will influence the future of zoning at Makarora will be discussed at a community meeting in the town on January 17, 2007.

"A natural hazard report has been prepared by the Otago Regional Council, a necessary step as the Queenstown Lakes District Council contemplates future zoning in the area," QLDC senior policy analyst Alyson Schuler said.

The purpose of the review was to investigate a more appropriate pattern of development, more sensitive to the environment.

"Similar reviews have taken place in other communities and in consultation with those communities, plan changes effected," Ms Schuler said.

QLDC was required to take account of the ORC's natural hazards report in making any decisions on whether to make any amendments to the Rural Lifestyle zoning.

"The report, which is still in draft form, will identify any hazards as we plan future development of the area. Alpine settings are exposed to various natural hazards and Makarora is no exception. The report will look at issues such as potential flooding and landslide risk," Ms Schuler said.

Representatives of both councils would attend the meeting at the Makarora Community Centre, which would commence at 6pm.

"We really encourage the residents in the area to attend as it's a good opportunity for all parties to look at the issues and get some feedback on the way forward," Ms Schuler said.
