Landslide Closes Walking Track

An estimated 200m long and 100m wide landslide has closed the One Mile Track (Ben Lomond, Queenstown) until further notice.

"The slip has brought down several enormous rocks, including one estimated to be 10m long and 5m wide which crossed the walking track, along with a number of large beech and pine trees," Queenstown Lakes District Council parks manager Gordon Bailey said.

Other huge boulders were being held back only by tree trunks.

The slip is believed to have been caused by two days of heavy rain late last month, when several other slips occurred.

Local engineering geologist Jeff Bryant said it was the largest landslide he had seen since the Frankton Road slip, caused by the 1999 floods.

"The area is in a state of 'marginal stability' and there is risk of further rock fall," he said.

The entire One Mile Track, accessible from Thompson Street, the One Mile Powerhouse, the Fernhill Reserve, Cameron Place, Wynyard Crescent and the Skyline Gondola Road, had been closed until further notice.

"Our first concern is public safety.  We urge residents and visitors to keep well clear until we can stabilise the area," Mr Bailey said.
